Travel Fashion Hack: Renting

If you are like me, you love a new outfit for each vacation but often it is not in the budget especially more than one. This applies often beyond vacations. Renting gives you freedom from commitment of having to be obsessed with an item to buy it. Best news is if you do love it there is typically a discounted option to buy the item.

Renting allows you to try brands and styles outside of your price range. I know I am far more willing to try an item outside my typical style when I know I will wear it once or twice and I can easily return it. Fun part about renting for vacation is I can pick out items like seahorse or seashell prints, lots of sequins and out-there colors that make great stand out vacation pictures but don’t really work for the frequency of everyday wear for their price tag.

Another type of travel where I greatly love renting is for Business Trips. This is the time to be on your fashion A-game in a professional manner. Business outfits can still be fun and show personality. Renting allows me to rent a beautiful high quality/high fashion blazer, blouse and or trousers for the important event I have to attend on these trips. You can round out the look with high quality/high fashion accessories as well. Even a comfy but styled airport outfit or casual off-hours outfit can be rented as anytime you are out of your room you can run into colleagues, so I like to look put together and styled even in lower-key relaxed outfits. I have definitely run into co-workers at the airport on our way to the same business trip event. This is not the time to wear your pajamas to the airport. There are lots super soft sweaters, causal dresses and rompers available to rent to round out a business trip appropriate airport outfit.

I use Rent the Runway as my preferred method, but there are many options out there and even some for men. I was surprised when my financial adviser fully endorsed the idea of renting over buying as a budget friendly option. It makes sense though as with the plan I have it costs me about $15 per item to rent for items that retail from $250-$600 approximately. This plan makes sense for me because I also where the items to work on a daily basis. If you are looking to rent specifically for travel there are great plan options for that as well.

A question I get often for renting for travel is what happens if my suitcase gets lost. It is important when signing up for rental services to read the fine print about what will happen in scenarios like this. I have had good luck so far **Knocks on wood*. If this is a big concern for you, you can always pack them in your carryon to keep them with you. Make sure to pack them in a waterproof bag or packing cube to keep them safe while in your carryon if you plan to put other items like food or liquids in your bag.

Renting is a great tool and resource for the fashionista on a budget. We would love for you to give it a try.
